In all, since you want more simple worlds and traditional JRPG designs, I think Suikoden I+II, Dragon Quest IV and Final Fantasy V might be best for you. Gameplay and tone a VERY different though. And it has tons of callbacks to Chrono Trigger's characters and story. Still, despite how much people hate on it, it's a good game. Just remember that the developers were trying to make the design of the game very different from Chrono Trigger (a lot more like a Final Fantasy game of the PS1 era). Some of the many games still on my backlog.Īnd of course, you can play Chrono Cross, which is part of the Chrono series. I've heard that Radiant Historia and Live A Live are a lot like Chrono Trigger, but I have yet to play them. Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 have similar character models, but that's about it. It's more of a follow up to Final Fantasy III and V. I would love to recommend Bravely Default as well, but while it has a slight time travel element and some fun characters, almost nothing else resembles Chrono Trigger. But it probably is my favorite of the games and worth playing by itself. And it's mostly in the tone and characters. You'd think that Final Fantasy would have a lot of similarities to Chrono Trigger, given that the Final Fantasy team was the other half of the Chrono Trigger "dream team." But from my experience, only one game is remotely close to Chrono Trigger. Which has a very different plot and character dynamic, but a lot of similarities in combat, tone and pacing. Dragon Quest VIII has a similar tone and characters, but the plot and design are very different (in a good way). Dragon Quest V, VII and XI have some similarities in plot (as well as time travel). Dragon Quest IV has a similar story progression and cast of characters. And even then, you have a wide variety of elements to choose from. So those games have similar visuals, characters and tone. The Dragon Quest games are made by half the team that worked on Chrono Trigger, specifically the head writer and art designer. You can find games that did some elements of it. Haven't played any JRPGs which replicated everything Chrono Trigger did. Please note that the current mod team has no affiliation to this server, so take it as "unofficial".
